Katherine Hansma—A Life Well Led

(25 June 1920-14 May 2015)

Kay is mother of Larry King of Hudson, OH (Sue); Georgia Daily of Canoga Park, CA, (Jerry d2014), Barbara Schlosser of Grand Rapids (Roger), Gary Hansma of Dexter, MI (Marguerite); and Brian Hansma of Lincoln Lake, MI (Kim); 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; and sister of John Clark of Wyoming, MI (Joan).  Her 1958 marriage to Robert Hansma (d1985) united two families—and she never wavered from that commitment.  She was born in Martin, Michigan to Lee and Viola Clark. Upon Lee’s sudden death in the mid thirties, she and her mother and brother moved to Grand Rapids, where she graduated from Creston High School. She worked for many years as a secretary to William Welch the famous shopping mall designer associated with Daverman Engineers and Architects. She finished her career in the tax office of the City of Wyoming.  She had many skills and talents and was famous for her needlework and quilting skills. She drew raves and kudos from a showing of her work at Covenant Village, where she spent the last years of her life. She was an avid reader and follower of Michigan college and professional sports teams and she kept current on state and national politics.  As a long time member of Holy Trinity (Episcopal) Church in Wyoming, she was active in all aspects of the parish. Her wise counsel, undergirded by her strong sense of Christian and patriotic values, brought love and strength to her family and friends through a long and fruitful life.  Hers was indeed a life well led. Her funeral mass will be at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (5333 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming, MI 49509) on Saturday 23 May  at 11:00 am.  Memorials in her name may be made to Holy Trinity or Faith Hospice, 2100 Raybrook SE, Suite 300, Grand Rapids, MI 49546. Condolences may be sent online at www.mkdfuneralhome.com.

Kate was the very special mother of my very special friend of almost 40 years, Georgia. Despite only meeting her a few times, she became my favorite mom after the death of my own. She sent cross-stitched Christmas ornaments that I treasure. I admired her faith, patriotism, perserverance and sense of duty. Most of all, I admired her for raising good and loving children who were gifts to the world, just like she was. ~Patti Strong

I will miss, and have missed, Katherine. I did her hair every Friday morning for several years before she moved to Covenant Village. Even though it wasn't easy for her to get around even back then, she was always upbeat and put me in a good mood. She spoke her mind, which was good, because she had some great things to say. Have missed seeing her "Talbots " clothes that she would wear! All of us at Timeless Hair Studio send our condolences to her family. Chris
